Why is Sakalava Bay such a magical spot for wingfoiling?

Wingfoiling is currently the most modern and addictive water sport around. At Ocean Lodge, you’ll find the ideal spot to enjoy your first smooth and safe rides.

Thanks to the constant Varatraza wind, which blows in the ideal direction (side-onshore), you’ll never be swept out to sea. The water, perfectly sheltered from the waves by the reef, offers a smooth (flat) surface, eliminating the choppy conditions that make it difficult to get the foil off the water early.

The wingfoil spot is accessible for around 3 hours before and 3 hours after high tide, giving you 4 to 6 hours of riding per day (75 cm mast). Conditions are at their best around mid-tide and high tide.

Step 1

Handling the wing

You’ll start off on a stand-up paddleboard to get to grips with the wing and understand how to control power and direction. These are your first steps before moving on to the foil.

Step 2

First take-offs

Try out a voluminous wingfoil board and a short beginner’s mast. Discover the magical sensation of flight, how to control your trim, and experience your first glides through the air.

Step 3

Further training

Are you comfortable out on the water? Refine your riding technique, pick up speed and learn to string together jibes (turns without touching the water) and transitions whilst staying on the foil. For the most advanced riders.

For independent riders, our centre offers equipment from the leading foil brands for hire.

F-One Strike kites (one of the market leaders), F-One and Quatro boards, with foil sizes suited to every ability level and body type.

On the beach, our team is on hand to assist you every day: inflating wings with a compressor, helping you get out onto the water and providing constant supervision of the lagoon during your sessions.

After your session, enjoy a range of homemade dishes, created by our pastry chef. There are two menus to choose from at every meal (lunch and dinner), with no fixed times: you can eat whenever you get out of the water.
